HOW TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR RV REFRIGERATOR

Based on all of the various RV refrigerator repair situations we’ve helped folks with over the years, here are two keys for extending the life of your RV refrigerator:

  •  Keep your RV level: Whenever you’re not moving, or you’ve settled down for the day, ensure that your RV is level enough so that you feel comfortable walking around inside. This is a good guage for keeping your RV level enough to avoid refrigerator damage. If you leave your RV parked on a steep surface, you can actually damage your RV refrigerator in as little as 20 minutes.
  • Keep your house batteries charged: This applies to you if you’re running your RV refrigerator on propane. For this type of refrigerator you need power (12 volt power specifically) to run in addition to the propane. If your batteries are not properly or fully charged this can cause your RV refrigerator to run irregularly and malfunction.

TIPS FOR REFRIGERATOR TROUBLESHOOTING

How to detect an RV refrigerator leak:

The easiest way to identify an RV refrigerator leak is by smell.  If you can smell ammonia then you have a leak on your hands. Ammonia can be dangerous, affecting both your eyesight and breathing.  Make sure that you turn off the refrigerator as quickly as possible. This situation will require a mobile rv repair technician to determine if your RV refrigerator can be repaired or if you just need a new fridge.

In some cases you may hear a bubbling noise near the rear of the refrigerator even after it has been turned on.

Another tell tale sign of a leak is your refrigerator is simply not cooling.  You can also visually inspect the back of your fridge and look for any stains (Typically yellow or green).  Stains would indicate that you have a leak on your hands.

RV refrigerator not working on 110V power but works on propane:

  • First step here is to double check all of your circuit breakers and fuses.
  • If you know how, you can check the voltage on the outlet on the back of your fridge with a multimeter.

RV refrigerator working on 110V power but not on propane:

  • First ensure that your propane tank is not empty
  • Check the strength of your pilot light flame. If your pilot light goes out right away or appears weak, this could indicate a bad thermocouple.

Other factors that can cause a weak pilot light flame include debris around the burner. You can clean this area of debris by vacuuming around the burner.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR RV REFRIGERATOR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

  • Tightening Your Refrigerator Connections: It’s always a good idea to regularly remove the outside lower vent that provides access to the back of your refrigerator to check all connections.  Make sure your refrigerator is turned off before doing this.  Every bump on the road can add up to eventually loosening some of these connections. Checking them is always a good idea in between long stretches of travel.

  • What color is your pilot light flame? A yellow flame is always a good indicator that your RV refrigerator may not be running properly. It could be as simple as too much soot in the flue or burner. These areas can easily be cleaned out with an air compressor. A blue flame is a healthy flame and should be your end result.

RV REFRIGERATOR REPAIR FAQ

How can I tell if my RV refrigerator has a problem?

The easiest way to monitor your RV refrigerator’s health is by using thermometers. Specifically, thermometers designed for use in refrigerators. We recommend using them in each compartment of your refrigerator to monitor the temperature.
