Understanding Your RV Water System

Your RV’s plumbing is made up of a system of pipes that draws water from your fresh water holding tank or from your city water hookup. Your RV’s water pump is used to provide water pressure and push your water through the RV’s plumbing system. For water being provided from a city hookup no pressurization is needed because city water comes in pressurized.

In order for water to be heated it has to travel into your water heater before heading to your sinks and showers. We take special care to bypass the water heater when winterizing your RV. Water heaters operate in a sealed off system, and introducing antifreeze to a water heater can cause significant damage.

Preparation Steps For Winterizing Your RV

  • Disconnect any outside water sources
  • Empty your water system by draining all water. There will be three low-point drains: your cold water line, hot water line and your fresh water tank. You’ll need to open the petcocks to make sure that you drain out as much water as possible. In addition to this, you’ll want to open all water taps, faucets, showers and flush the toilet a few times to drain any remaining water from your RV water system.
  • Empty your water heater. On the external side of your water heater you’ll want to remove the drain plug in the lower corner or you can open the drain valve which is near the drain plug. During this time, you’ll open your faucets on the hot water side in order to equalize the pressure and drain the tank.

Additional Tips For Storing Your RV For The Winter

  • Remove all food from your RV. Any food that is forgotten may attract unwanted pests such as mice.
  • Ensure that all storage areas are clean, including your oven, range top, refrigerator and perimeter around your dinette.
  • Double check all your seals near doors and windows that could possible let pests in.
  • Make sure your 120 volt line cord has been disconnected and stored.
  • Ensure that your parking break is activated and parking chalks are in place.
  • Make sure that your RV is stabilized and test the stability by walking around your RV

RV WINTERIZATION FAQ

What is the most common problem you see with Winterizing an RV?
The most common mistake we see is actually with the de-winterizing process. Many times folks will add water back to their system too early.

They’ll get a little over eager and believe that winter is over. They’ll then add water into their system to get a head start on prepping their RV for Spring travel, and then if we experience a late winter storm and the temperature drops below freezing, that water expands as it freezes and can cause significant damage to their RV’s water system.
